  1. Scientists find proof that turtles navigate by the earth’s magnetic field (Discover).
  2. Oceana opens a new office in Copenhagen (Oceana).  This joins their offices in the US, Spain, Chile, Belgium, and Belize.  I’m excited to see what sort of projects they’ll work on in Denmark.
  3. The world’s environment ministers jointly called for reforms to support the ‘green economy’ (UNEP). This recognizes that the ‘environmental pillar’ of sustainable development remains weak, fractured, and underfunded.  Next year, this issue will be addressed at a very important environment meeting, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development 2012, aka Rio+20.  (This follows up on the historic Rio Conference in 1992, which gave us the Rio Declaration on Environment and Development, the Convention on Biological Diversity, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), under which the Kyoto Protocol was negotiated.)
  4. A bryozoan species is acting as a new and mysterious carbon sink in the southern ocean (bluelivingideas).
  5. The count of dead baby dolphins in the Gulf of Mexico continues to rise, totaling 60 on Friday (TreeHugger).
  6. Indonesian islands of Sumatra and Borneo lost 9% of their forests in first 8 years of 21st century (TreeHugger).
  7. In the early days of buoy design, there was a mystery danger to be found: fish bites (WHOI).
