Breaching Blue Podcast: Tim Ecott, Author of Neutral Bouyancy

July 6, 2011

I recently interviewed Tim Ecott, the author of Neutral Bouyancy, one of my favorite ocean books.  The book was published back in 2001, and it has continued to be a favorite in the dive community.  I know because I first came across it as a lowly divemaster in training back in 2006.

I see this book as the closest thing to a ‘dive bible’.   It helped expand my thinking on humanity’s interaction with the ocean just as my interest in ocean conservation was forming.  Among my favorite chapters are those on the history of the sponge industry, freediving legend Umberto Pelizzari, and the long-road we have traveled to understand the ‘bends’.

I’ve long been wanting to try my hand at podcasts, so I thought it would be great to have Tim as my first ‘test subject’.  Thankfully, he agreed.

Here is the podcast and subject/time info.  We talk about the book, writing, diving, and conservation.

1. [1:10]  Discovering Scuba Diving]
2. [4:38]  Writing Neutral Bouyancy, Selecting the Topics
3. [20:30]  Are Freedivers so Different?
4. [23:00]   ‘A Modern Classic’
5. [27:48]  Advocacy for Conservation and Continued Writing
6. [33:20]   Hope for the Ocean
7. [37:52]  Individual Choices for Conservation
8. [39:23]  Future Diving and Writing

P.S. I know, I know, I sound like I’m speaking in a tunnel. I promise better sound quality in the future. There’s a steep learning curve to these podcasts.
