Considering a Gerontocracy for the Ocean
Jon Bowermaster on the new OceanElders group:
Now established, how will the OceanElders weigh in? Their land-based counterparts, for example, sent Jimmy Carter and Lakhdar Brahimi to Cyprus to participate in a documentary about the search for thousands of missing persons killed there during fighting in the 1960s and 1970s. They’ve traveled to the Mideast twice to try and wrangle peace between the Palestinians and Israelis. Equality for women and reducing nuclear weapons are also two continuing themes.
Will the OceanElders take on big global issues, like reducing ocean acidification? Or will they dive in at local sea level debates between fishermen and those who would like to create Marine Protected Areas off-limits to fishermen?
